Canada offers shelter to three bear species. The image of bear invokes fear but ironic, yet interesting to know that bears are shy of humans and they try to stay away from humans. Bears love to live in the wilderness since the advent of the earth and its species. This is the reason of lack of our understanding about these nice beasts. Due to their habitat in the uninhabited area, it is inferred that they like to lead a discreet life.
Bear Facts:
Life Span of a bear varies from 20 to 25 years. The male and female bears are distinguished by their sizes. Female bears are half the size of the male bears.
The mating season of bears is spring or summer. After a maternity of 180- 266 days Female bears give birth to one to four cubs during the winter months.
Bear cubs are furless, blind and are a pound in weight at the time of the birth. They are ablactated at around five months of age.
Bears mostly live solitary life. When they are cubs, they live with their mothers for two to three years. One can find them in groups only at the feeding sites or while searching for mate.
Bears are thought as carnivorous if we go by the looks, but they prefer to munch on plants, thereby coming under the category of omnivorous animals.
Their likeness to human food garbage makes them get caught during an encounter with the bears. Those who live near bear habitats should keep their garbage in bear proof containers and away from the sleeping area so that their encounter with the bear is safe.
During the winter season, bears go for hibernation. When they enter sound sleep, their body temperature falls reducing their heart beat rate along with slow breathing. Before going for hibernation, bears eat a lot and build up the fat in their body which gets utilized during hibernation and does not make them feel hungry. For hibernation they dig a den under rocks or in the hollow of a tree. During the spring time they wake up from their dreamy sleep.
